Director Green Markets NYC United States of AmericaMichael Hurwitz is the Director of Greenmarket, a 40 year-old program of GrowNYC that operates 54 producer-only farmers markets throughout the five boroughs of New York City, as well as the Wholesale Greenmarket, and Greenmarket Co, GrowNYC’s regional food hub focused on creating business opportunities for local farmers in the wholesale marketplace while increasing access to fresh, healthy foods in underserved communities of NYC. Projects include Greenmarket Youth Education, Fresh Pantry, Greenmarket Regional Grains, FARMroots and Healthy Exchange. Through these initiatives, Greenmarket works with over 250 producers to preserve 51,000 acres of regional farmland by bringing the freshest and healthiest foods directly to all NYC residents. Prior to coming to Greenmarket, Michael was the Co-Founder of Added Value & Herban Solutions, Inc., a nonprofit organization in Red Hook, Brooklyn working to promote sustainable development in South Brooklyn by training young adults to be the leaders of change in their communities through the operation of a socially responsible market-farming micro enterprise. Michael graduated as a Public Service Scholar from the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law in 2007, and in 1999 he received his Masters of Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in Children and Families and Macro Social Work Practice.
