Description: This is a crosscutting initiative focusing on retheorizing social sustainability and sustainable transport as essentially intermodal, requiring context-sensitive packages of measures that combine diverse non-motorized, active transport and paratransport modes, in urban-rural systems articulated wherever possible by different kinds of BRT systems.
- We are using an interdisciplinary approach (geography, planning, anthropology, IT, engineering) to identify local, regional and global partners and map existing conditions regarding how transport/mobility/access issues overlap with gender, safety, age, decent work, public health requirements, especially those associated with the emergence of non-communicative diseases and the social determinants of health as high priorities for public health policies in many countries in the developed and developing world.
- Based on the initial mapping process, we will use diverse methods to map, enhance , and mainstream assets and reduce liabilities regarding intermodal + public transport (BRT+), and develop recommendations for what works best in different contexts, and how to adapt solutions to local needs and strengths.
- Within these objectives we are working on methods to mainstream social inclusion within transport and urban planning institutions, agencies and plans, and to develop effective, socially sensitive programs such as Happy Routes to Schools, gender-age-health integration programs within transport planning agencies and other relevant bodies, gender-age-health integration programs for bus operators and drivers, and planning tools that can enhance identification, achievement and monitoring of these values, within normal transport planning.
- We also work closely with our partners on educational and communicational aspects of social inclusion within sustainability.
- Development of a Social Inclusion Protocol for all publications, to ensure our sensitivity to these issues is reflected in our community communications weave, Communications Action Plan and other outreach components of our work.
- Inclusion of Social Inclusion fact sheets, guide books and other elements, within our knowledge platform, convidalacalle.net, as a hyper-index/public square where citizens, practitioners and others with interest in this material can connect with first-rate knowledge on diverse topics relating to sustainable transport, citizenship, civil society organizations, transitions to sustainability, will be central to both our communications and educational efforts.
- A specific set of actions within our Communications Action Plan referring to gender, age, health and other social issues as they interact with sustainable transport.
- As with our other projects, we will also enhance impact through the establishment of importance in the academic literature; papers (academic), public speaking, blogging and contributions in citizen and mixed citizen-public policy-practitioner fora, contributions to the Centre’s newsletters and educational program.
- Set of Innovative tools, methods, process recommendations and institutions useful to build better integration of diverse populations for effective BRT as a key surface-transport service, articulating a fully integrated and sustainable transport system in cities of diverse sizes and characteristics.
- Well tested toolkit covering methods, processes and institutions for gender-age-health mainstreaming and measures to improve BRT+ responses to these and other needs.
- Practical handbook on social sustainability mainstreaming within sustainable transport .
- Papers in academic journals; presentations at conferences, toolkits for integrating adequate responses to gender, age and other needs into general transport planning, and inputs into Pillar 1 in course delivery focusing on practitioner and civil society needs.
